READ THE CASE
Why Read?
“Read not to contradict and confute; nor to believe and take for granted; nor to find talk and discourse; but to weigh and consider.”
Francis Bacon
The first step in analyzing a case is to read the case and determine what you’re being asked to do with the case. Are there questions to answer, a problem to address, or a decision to evaluate? Take notes on critical facts and issues; this helps to understand the case and identify the fundamental problems. And remember, there isn’t only one correct answer!
First Read (10 minutes):
-
- Read the opening and ending paragraphs.
- Who? What? Why? When? Where? How?
- A quick look at the case exhibits.
- A quick review of case subtitles.
- Skim case body.
- Read assignment questions and reflect.
Second Read (30 to 60 minutes):
Read the case in its entirety. Begin to understand the case and identify potential problems and solutions.
-
- Pay attention to questions.
- Distinguish symptoms from issues.
- Limit issues to a manageable set.
- Take notes, highlight relevant facts, and underline key problems.
It’s useful to think of a case analysis as digging deeper and deeper into the layers of a case.
