Protecting Privacy
As a faculty member, you are governed by the Freedom of Information and Privacy Act (FIPA) and therefore have a professional responsibility to safeguard the privacy of your students. Faculty are typically aware and vigilant when formal requests for student information or whereabouts are received, referring these requests to the Freedom of Information Officer and following other appropriate procedures. However, this responsibility extends to all records including drafts, post-it notes, notations in electronic systems, emails, mobile device files, agendas, notes in notebooks, and verbal disclosure of information. All private student information should be safeguarded by faculty at all times.
