Data Collection Tools: Focus on Teaching

Feedback on your teaching can be provided through several quantitative as well as qualitative indicators which may include how your academic program scores on college-wide Key Performance Indicators, student course evaluations, and course retention. These tools and metrics are useful as broad indicators of teaching success. However, to collect feedback on the full scope of your teaching practice, you may consider incorporating additional tools which can provide more granular and individualized feedback to support learning and development.

This section contains a variety of tools that you can use to collect data about your effectiveness as a teacher. Your other faculty roles of student advising, designing assessments, program review etc., will be addressed in Part Three of this manual. The tools in this section will help you to take ‘a deeper dive’ and collect information that is directly related to your teaching practice. This data will help you to reflect on what you are doing, how well you are doing it, and how you might improve. Part three also includes a special section just for Coordinators. Faculty members who take on the additional roles and responsibilities of coordinating their program assume a leadership role within their faculty teams. The tools provided within this section assist Coordinators to reflect on some of the roles unique to these responsibilities.

These data collection tools are not meant to be used in sequence or all at one time. Select one or two tools that resonate with you right now and return periodically to this section of the manual to try something new. As you review the Workbook, think about how you may use these tools and exercises to elicit feedback about your personal style and how it can impact changes in your teaching.
