Accessibility and AODA Compliance

Mohawk College is dedicated to providing inclusive environments that are accessible and welcoming places for all students, employees and visitors. AODA stands for Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (2005). The purpose of this act is to benefit all Ontarians by:

  1. Developing, implementing and enforcing accessibility standards in order to achieve accessibility for Ontarians with disabilities with respect to goods, services, facilities, accommodation, employment, buildings, structures and premises on or before January 1, 2025;
  2. Providing for the involvement of persons with disabilities, of the Government of Ontario and of representatives of industries and of various sectors of the economy in the development of the accessibility standards. (AODA website, retrieved Feb 23, 2021[1])

We are dedicated to the principles of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA), and aim to ensure that dignity, integration and equality of opportunity are embedded in all aspects of the College culture. As the RRT is focused on creating engaging digital learning content, we recognize that principles of accessibility are at the core of what we do. We strive to incorporate best practices at each stage of the process, from creation, delivery and review of digital learning tools. For example, this applies to an understanding of accessibility requirements of specific media, such as compatibility with screen reader technology. Broadly speaking, we also aim to incorporate the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), which provides a framework of equity, accessibility, and inclusivity for various learning modalities.
