Personal Values

Values help shape a person, influencing behaviours and choices made. They serve as principles, which provide guidance as we set priorities in our lives, and may be related to our ethical framework. Values can be taught, or may be acquired through observation and experience (Burkhardt, Nathaniel, & Walton, 2010). We are often unaware of certain values, but these may be brought to awareness when faced with situations that may conflict with our values. Many values I have were taught to me, but through experience, their importance has been clarified and solidified. The four key values I have that I feel relate well to my future practice as a nurse are: Kindness, Resilience, Empathy and Integrity. These values are influenced and influence my beliefs regarding the role of a nurse in a healthcare setting.

  1. Kindness
Kindness is the foundation of my interactions with patients, families, and colleagues. Research highlights that kindness in healthcare not only improves patient satisfaction but also contributes to better health outcomes. As Rippstein-Leuenberger et al. (2017) state, “simple acts of kindness, such as listening attentively or offering reassurance, can significantly improve the patient experience” (p. 123). I believe that fostering kindness in my practice creates a healing environment that addresses the emotional and psychological needs of patients, which is just as important as their physical care.
  2. Resilience
Resilience is crucial for adapting to challenges and thriving in the demanding nursing profession. I view resilience as the ability to remain steady and optimistic during adversity, enabling me to grow stronger through challenges.
  3. Empathy
Empathy enables me to connect deeply with patients, ensuring they feel understood and cared for. As Sinclair et al. (2016) argue, “empathy is central to the therapeutic relationship, facilitating emotional support and enhancing patient trust” (p. 442). This value guides me to listen actively, validate emotions, and respond thoughtfully to patients’ unique needs. Empathy in practice ensures that I am not only treating illnesses but also caring for the whole person.
  4. Integrity
Integrity underpins my actions and decisions in nursing, ensuring that I remain ethical and accountable. This value drives me to be transparent in my communication, advocate for patient rights, and deliver care that reflects the highest ethical standards.
