Introduction to the Clinical Professional Practice Courses Clinical Placement Progression Conditions

The Clinical Professional Practice courses in the PSW program are designed to help you apply everything you’ve learned in the classroom and lab settings to real-world healthcare environments. These courses build on each other and must be completed in a specific order—this structure ensures you’re fully prepared for each stage of your clinical training.  Information is provided in the OER for the PSW Student, Fanshawe Clinical Instructor/Liaison and Agency Mentors to know the expectations and requirements for the FLDP 1022 Field Practicum.

For a detailed overview of the Clinical Professional Practice course sequence and progression requirements review Chapter 1.2.

What you Need to Know

a) Courses must be taken in order.

Each clinical course is a stepping stone to the next. You must complete and pass each one before moving forward.

b) Progression Depends on Successful Completion.

To move on to the Consolidation and Community Clinical Professional Practice courses, you must pass:

  • All theory courses,
  • All lab components,
  • All previous clinical placements.

For example:

  • If you don’t pass the Long-Term Care Clinical Placement, you won’t be able to continue to the next clinical course.
  • If you don’t pass the Consolidation Clinical Placement, you won’t be eligible for the Community Clinical Placement.

c) Financial Considerations.

If you’re unable to progress to the next clinical course, you are still responsible for the full term’s tuition. If you have questions, please connect with the PSW Program Coordinator for guidance.

HLTH 3054 Clinical Professional Practice Placement Long-Term Care Setting

The HLTH 3054 Clinical Professional Practice course helps you to apply all of the skills and concepts learned in your first semester in the PSW Program.  This includes your Clinical Preparation, the classroom and lab practice, which will prepare you to provide care for residents in a long-term care setting. You will be introduced to the role and responsibilities of the PSW while providing personal care and using appropriate communication with clients and the health care team.  Throughout your clinical placement practice, you will synthesize learned knowledge and continue to provide safe, competent care for an increasing number of clients.

During this course, you will be introduced to the morning and afternoon shifts at your clinical agency.

To progress to the next clinical course, HLTH 3055: PSW Consolidation Clinical Placement, you must show competence in all five domains of practice. Read Chapter 5.2 to review the clinical professional practice domains.
