  • Describe how to access and use current, accessible resources and tools provided in the OER to support clinical learning and supervision.
  • Explain the purpose and structure of the clinical placement domains of practice and how they align with PSW competencies.
  • Explain how clinical documentation, communication, and reflective practice can be applied in the clinical professional practice setting.
  • Identify the importance of collaboration between students, PSW staff/preceptors, and Fanshawe faculty during the clinical professional practice placement.

HLTH 3055 Clinical Professional Practice Placement Consolidation

The HLTH 3055 Clinical Professional Practice Consolidation course helps you (PSW student) to apply all of the skills and concepts learned in your PSW program thus far.

This clinical practice consolidation placement will enable you to work both independently and as part of the team while enhancing your problem-solving and critical thinking within a PSW’s scope of practice. You will be expected to demonstrate all acquired skills you have learned so far in a consistent and competent manner, focusing specifically on confidentiality, safety, organization, communication, and documentation while caring for a variety of clients in a long-term care setting. During this course, it is very important to display reliability and accountability at all times by following the policies, rules and regulations of both Fanshawe College and the placement agency.

During this course, you will be introduced to the morning/afternoon/evening and night shifts at your clinical agencies, in order to understand the challenges that clients face throughout the day and night and the care that is required. You will complete your clinical professional practice with an assigned preceptor and/or PSW staff, as well as be in frequent contact with your clinical liaison (Fanshawe College Faculty).  Instead of a group of PSW students attending placement shifts at the same time, you will now complete shifts independently.

After completion of the HLTH 2055 Clinical Professional Practice Consolidation course, you will progress to the next clinical course, HLTH 2056 – PSW Community Clinical Placement. You must show competence in all five domains of practice. Read Chapter 5.2 to review the clinical professional practice domains.
