2.2 PSW Clinical Professional Practice Students
PSW Student Role
As a student, you are supported and guided by a Clinical instructor and agency PSW in your first professional practice placement (HLTH 3054). The two placements following (HLTH 3055 and HLTH 3056) will build on your experience, and you will be supported and guided by a PSW preceptor and a Fanshawe placement advisor to learn, continue to build on your professional practice, and broaden your knowledge and skills as a Personal Support Worker.
Student Expectations

- Complete the PSW Clinical Professional Practice Pre-Placement Requirements through Synergy – Semester 1 of the program.
- Complete Level 1 of the PSW program, including HLTH 1096 Lab 1
- Attend Placement Orientation on campus to review clinical placement expectations & meet with Fanshawe College Clinical Instructors.
- Complete any Clinical Agency Policy & Procedures, onboarding modules, and training as assigned before starting placement.
- Attend Placement Orientation at the agency (Day 1).
- Adhere to all Clinical Placement agency policies, practices, and procedures.
- Share OER link & Clinical Professional Practice Documents with Clinical Instructor/Placement Advisor.
- Collaborate effectively with the Clinical Instructor, PSW mentors, and Agency Staff members.
- Complete the required reflective practice assignments and activities from the course curricula.
- Attend clinical professional practice placement on scheduled days and complete ALL hours.
- Arrive at placement on time and be prepared, for example, scrubs on, shoes on, lunch places in pre-assigned areas.
- Participate in all required skills and tasks as required by the PSW at the placement agency (per instructor/agency guidelines).
- Demonstrate the Learning Outcomes outlined in the Clinical Professional Practice Curriculum.
- Ongoing assessment and review of progress/learning with the clinical instructor, placement supervisor, and/or PSW mentor.
- Demonstrate initiative and responsibility in learning and in completing skills.
- Demonstrate curiosity and a willingness to learn from instructors/mentors.
- Accept and reflect on constructive feedback.
- Have a positive and collaborative approach to learning.
- Practice professionalism and ethical behaviour.
- Maintain privacy and confidentiality at ALL times.
- Adhere to Fanshawe College’s Code of Conduct Policy A130 and Program Rules.
- Comply with uniform requirements set out by Fanshawe College and the agency, including your Fanshawe College PSW crest, name tag, and closed-toed running shoes.
- Complete the ends in view and practice domain requirements for each of the following professional practice placements: HLTH 3054, HLTH 3055, and HLTH 3056.
- Be respectful of all agency staff, leaders, clinical instructors, clinical advisors, and residents.
Always remember that the agency is the residents’ home. Being in their home is a privilege, and we must conduct ourselves with care and respect.
