Lockdown Procedures & Shelter-in-Place Guidelines
In the event of a lockdown due to a threat on or near campus, your safety depends on quick and calm action. If you are directly involved or receive a lockdown notification and cannot safely exit the building, follow these steps:
Immediate Actions
- Go to the nearest secure room or office.
- Close and lock the door if possible. Use furniture to barricade the entrance.
- Cover door windows and turn off lights.
- Remain silent and act as if the room is empty.
- Silence all cell phones and devices.
- Do not open the door under any circumstances. Emergency personnel will have keys.
Contact Security (If Safe to Do So)
- McMaster Security (IAHS):
- Dial 88 from campus phones
- Dial 905-522-4135 from external phones
- Use the MUSST App
Provide the following information:
- Your name
- Your exact location
- Number of suspects (if known)
- Description of the suspect
- Names of all individuals present with you
Remain in Place
Stay in your secured location until:
- You are officially released by Police or Security personnel
- You receive clear instructions to evacuate
