Program Expectations

The Practical Nursing Program at Mohawk College is designed to prepare students for professional practice through a combination of theoretical instruction, hands-on learning, and clinical experience. To support student success and uphold professional standards, the following expectations apply throughout the duration of the program.

Face-to-Face and Remote Delivery Expectations

Due to the experiential and collaborative nature of learning in the Practical Nursing Program, attendance is expected at all scheduled sessions to support student success and achievement of course objectives. The program is intensive and demands a high level of commitment. Students are expected to prioritize their studies and manage other responsibilities, such as employment, accordingly.

Students should attend all scheduled course hours, including:

  • Face-to-face lectures
  • Synchronous remote lectures (e.g. Microsoft Teams)
  • Laboratory sessions
  • Tutorials/Seminars
  • Site visits
  • Professional practice placements

Students may be required to attend classes, events, or professional practice placements scheduled Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. In some cases, activities may occur outside regular hours, including weekends.

Attendance and Punctuality

  • Absences hinder assessment of student progress and limit participation in evaluated group activities.
  • Frequent absences may require review with the Academic Advisor or course faculty.
  • Students should not to schedule vacations during the academic year and to remain available for at least two weeks following each semester to accommodate any required remediation or completion of missed components.
  • Students are responsible for obtaining missed content from classmates.

Professional Conduct

Punctuality is a core professional expectation. Chronic lateness is disruptive to the learning environment and will be reflected in course evaluations. Students are expected to arrive on time and be prepared to engage fully in all learning activities. For more information on attendance and punctuality, please refer to the next section.

Practicum Lab

Please review the lab course Policy and Code of Conduct in the next section.

Attendance at all scheduled clinical experiences is MANDATORY.

Illness, Bereavement and Special Leaves

Faculty must be notified immediately in the event of illness, bereavement, or other special circumstances. Each situation will be addressed on an individual basis, and appropriate documentation will be required. Faculty will follow the student assessment policy if evaluations are missed due to extenuating circumstances.
