Allergies and Sensitivities

To ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment, students must take responsibility for managing allergies and sensitivities while participating in labs, classes, and clinical placements.

Student Responsibilities

  • Disclose any allergies or medical conditions that may affect you during lab or placement to your supervisor or instructor.
  • Prepare and follow a personal protocol or plan to manage your condition safely.
  • Review your plan with your supervisor prior to lab or placement activities.

Latex Sensitivity

The IAHS building is working toward a latex-reduced environment due to the serious health risks associated with latex exposure, including anaphylactic reactions.

  • Students, staff, and faculty are asked to avoid bringing latex-based items into the building.
  • Certain areas (e.g., CHSR, CSL) may be identified as potential latex risk zones.
  • Students with latex sensitivities should inform relevant faculty as appropriate.

Scent Awareness

Exposure to scented products can cause adverse reactions in some individuals, ranging from mild irritation to severe symptoms.

Avoid using scented products, including:

  • Perfumes, colognes, aftershaves
  • Scented soaps, shampoos, deodorants
  • Air fresheners, scented candles, cleaning products

Many clinical sites are scent-free environments. Be sure to review and follow each location’s policies.
