Mohawk College requires all students to demonstrate course learning outcomes through formal evaluations as documented and scheduled on course learning plans. If an evaluation is missed, the student will receive a mark of “0” for that evaluation. However, learners who face exceptional circumstances that prevent completion of an evaluations as scheduled may be eligible for relief.

Known absences:  If a student knows in advance that an evaluation will be missed, the student must notify their professor in advance to be eligible for relief. The following circumstances will be considered for relief: Varsity athletics, official College events, cultural or religious related responsibilities, competing academic conflicts, and unavoidable medical procedures. Any other known or planned absences (ex. vacations/holidays, work conflict, etc.) will not be considered.

Unplanned absences:  Relief or supplemental assessments may be given to students in the event of illness, family emergency, or other extenuating circumstances. To be eligible for relief, the student must notify the course teacher prior to the assignment deadline, or at the earliest opportunity up to a maximum of 5 days after the missed evaluation.

The form of accommodation will be determined by the course teacher. The faculty will give direction on the next steps for the student.  If the faculty member determines that supportive documentation is required, students will be directed to submit through the Student Wellness Documentation Portal for review and validation. Students should never send documentation directly to faculty.

Note that this procedure does not apply to missed evaluations that are covered by other existing College Policies. Students requiring alternative arrangements as a result of accessibility needs must contact Accessible Learning Services.
