Course Descriptions

Prerequisites

Students must successfully complete each Health and Healing, Health Sciences, Lab and Professional Practice course before proceeding to the nursing courses in the next semester. General Education courses must be completed prior to entry into semester 4. All courses in the program of study (POS) both nursing and non-nursing, must be successfully completed before starting Pre-graduate experience in Semester 4. 

Corequisites

Core nursing courses, including theory, lab and professional practice are also corequisites. These courses need to be completed or repeated successfully and synchronously before progressing to the next term.

Semester 1 Courses

HSCI 10171Anatomy Physiology

Examine basic human anatomy and physiology of all body systems at the cellular, tissue and organ level.

INFO 10288 – Informatics in Health Care

Examine health informatics and the use of information communication technologies within an interdisciplinary learning environment. Analyze the implications of technology on the quality and safety of client care. Utilize hospital and community information systems and digital health solutions to create, access, and manage client information. Complete an interprofessional project relating to the use of emerging technologies and health applications and their impact on the health care system.

NRSG 10062 – Practicum 1 Lab

(Corequisites: NRSG 10065)

Apply theory and skills to assessment and nursing care of clients in simulated lab settings with faculty assistance. Develop critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills in assessment, nursing care and documentation. Establish therapeutic relationships with clients and practice fundamental nursing skills. Take client history and perform physical assessments. Complete accurate medication dosage calculations.

NRSG 10065 – Professional Development 1

(Corequisites: NRSG 10062)

Explore the nature and history of nursing as a profession and the legislative, regulatory and professional frameworks that govern and inform its practice. Examine the role of the nurse within the interprofessional health care team and factors affecting team effectiveness. Analyze the role of research and scholarly literature in nursing practice. Apply a framework for ethical decision-making and assess the impact of culture on the nurse’s interactions with clients and colleagues.

NRSG 10077 – Health & Healing 1

Explore contexts in which nurses’ practice levels of health care they provide, and their role on the Interprofessional Health Care Team (IPHCT). Discuss determinants of health and their role in health care. Recognize the value and application of nursing theory. Use a data collection tool to assess client needs. Discuss principles of growth and development and the role of the family in client care. Apply critical thinking skills and the nursing process to engage in collaborative case-based learning.

NRSG 10130 – Foundations of Nursing and Community:

Foundational nursing knowledge and skills. Apply these new skills in a simulated experience to prepare students for professional practice within the community and hospital settings. Students will participate in a community experience and explore the influences of population health on communities.

COMM LL041 – Communications

Communication is an introductory college level English course. Students exiting this course will demonstrate competence in grammar, sentence structure, and writing skills. Successful students in this course will develop the reading, writing, critical and analytical skills essential to them as communicators in college and upon graduation.

This course teaches writing through the critical reading of various fiction and non-fiction material and brings students to college level foundation skills.

COMM 11040 – Communications D

Communication is an introductory college level English course. Through a variety of assignments, successful students in this course will develop the reading, writing, critical and analytical skills essential to them as communicators in college and upon graduation. This course teaches writing through the critical reading of various fiction and non-fiction material and brings students with basic skills to college level foundational skills.

Semester 2 Courses

HSCI 10146Health Sciences 2

Examine immunity, hypersensitivity, and related pharmacology. Specified metabolic disorders including diabetes mellitus, liver disorders, renal disorders, and related pharmacology. Specified respiratory disorders and related pharmacology. Specified neurological disorders including stroke and related pharmacology. Genetics and specified genetic disorders including sickle cell disease, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, Huntington’s disease, cystic fibrosis, and related treatments/therapies, including pharmacology.

INDS 10039 – Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Doing in Healthcare

This course explores Indigenous Ways of Knowing and application of healthcare practices. Colonization principles of Indigenous Knowledge, and the ideologies of reconciliation will be explored. The concepts of cultural safety as it relates to Indigenous healthcare will be examined.

NRSG 10063 – Health & Healing 2

Examine concepts of chronicity and related health conditions within the context of health and wellness. Effect of the nurse’s personal values and beliefs on treatment of clients with chronic health conditions and within the interprofessional health care team (IPHCT). The impact of the following diseases on the client, family and/or significant others: diabetes, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Impact of the following critical health conditions on the client, family and/or significant others: myocardial infarction, heart failure, stroke (cerebrovascular accident), renal failure.

NRSG 10064 – Practicum 2 Lab

(Corequisites: WORK 10087)

Apply theory and skills in assessment and nursing care of medical clients in simulated lab settings with faculty assistance. Apply critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills in assessment, nursing care and documentation. Demonstrate medical nursing skills with a focus on client safety. Parenteral and non-parenteral medication administration will be examined, with a specific focus on medication dosage and intravenous (IV) therapy administration.

PSYC SS271 – Developmental Psychology

The study of human development from conception to death focusing on physical, cognitive, social and personality growth throughout the lifespan.

WORK 10087 – Professional Practice 2

(Pre-requisites: WORK10086)

(Corequisites: NRSG 10064)

Assess clients, plan and provide care as a member of the interprofessional health care team (IPHCT), with a focus on medication administration. Transfer and consolidate knowledge and skills from the previous semester and apply skills learned and practiced in Practicum 2 Lab.

Semester 3 Courses

OPEL XXXXXGeneral Education 1

This course represents your first requirement to complete a General Education elective. General education courses are intended to broaden your educational experience, and help you to develop new perspectives on your life and career. These courses must focus on content that is separate from your core area of study, and must reflect at least one of the five themes of general education as defined by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development: Arts in Society, Civic Life, Social and Cultural Understanding, Personal Understanding, Understanding Science and Technology.

HSCI 10153 – Health Sciences 3

Explore basic concepts of specified pathophysiological health states, including related pharmacology. Examine stress as a response, including related pharmacology.

Physiology of pain, including related pharmacology. Fluid, electrolyte and acid-base imbalances, including related pharmacology. Pathophysiology of shock will be studied, as well as specified musculoskeletal disorders, including degenerative inflammatory, autoimmune, and traumatic disorders, including related pharmacology. Specified vascular disorders, including related pharmacology. Specified gastrointestinal disorders, including peptic ulcer disease and inflammatory bowel disease, including related pharmacology. Pathophysiology of cancer and disease process of breast, colorectal, leukemia, lung, lymphoma and prostate cancers, as well as childhood cancers including common cancer treatment modalities. Blood types, blood products and anemia.

NRSG 10070 – Practicum 3 Lab

(Corequisites: WORK 10103)

Apply theory and skills in assessment and nursing care of surgical clients in simulated lab settings. Apply critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills in pre-operative and post-operative assessment, nursing care and documentation and collaboration with the interprofessional health care team (IPHCT). Demonstrate competent performance of surgical nursing skills. Accurately complete intravenous IV and medication dosage calculations.

NRSG 10072 – Health & Healing 3

Utilize critical enquiry to plan collaborative client care based on analysis of case studies involving clients with surgical, medical and neoplastic conditions. Review pathophysiology and pharmacology relevant to care of medical and surgical clients. The focus will be on nursing management of various medical and surgical conditions.

SSCI SS108 – Introduction to Sociology

Sociology provides insight into how society influences human behaviour. By studying the problems and social issues in society, we are able to gain a better understanding of how society affects people. This course explores various sociological perspectives and demonstrates how systematic studies are used to challenge common sense perspectives about social life. Particular areas of study include culture, socialization, deviant behaviour, social inequality and economy.

WORK 10103 – Professional Practice 3

(Pre-requisites: WORK10087)

(Corequisites: NRSG 10070)

Assess clients, plan and provide nursing care in acute surgical/medical areas as a member of the interprofessional health care team (IPHCT). Apply skills learned and practiced in Practicum 3 Lab, transfer knowledge and consolidate skills from previous semesters.

Semester 4 Courses

Health Sciences 4

Explore the basic concepts, physiologic changes, and related pharmacology involved during pregnancy, labour, and childbirth. Explore the concepts, pathophysiology, and related pharmacology of mental health disorders across the lifespan.

NRSG 10071 – Practicum 4 Lab

(Corequisites: NRSG 10079, NRSG 100)

Apply theory and skills in the provision of care for clients within maternal/child and mental health contexts, including critical thinking and clinical decision-making. Identify criteria used to manage postpartum, neonatal and mental health issues within an interprofessional simulated practice setting.

NRSG 10078 – Health & Healing 4

Use critical enquiry to explore the specialized areas of maternal-child nursing and interprofessional care of the client with mental health diagnosis through analysis of case studies. Examine theoretical foundations of nursing care and assessment of mother and newborn during the postpartum period, including postpartum mental health issues and their impact on the family unit. Analyze a variety of mental health conditions, their impact on the client and family, and the nurse’s role within the interprofessional health care team.

NRSG 10079 – Professional Development 4

(Corequisites: NRSG 10071, NRSG 10080)

Prepare to make the role transition from nursing student to practicing nurse. Examine service learning as an opportunity to synthesize knowledge of population health and its key determinants. Discuss the Canadian Health Care System in an international context and the organization of health care delivery in Ontario. Outline the role of nursing with the health care system. Review leadership skills, styles, and their application within organizations. Develop strategies to promote successful transition from student to professional role.

NRSG10131 – Comprehensive Advanced Simulation

This course will prepare the learner for the role of the registered practical nurse in the workforce using a variety of appropriate simulation modalities. Communication, managing rapidly changing patient conditions, adverse event reporting and interprofessional collaboration will be examined. Students will explore the application of knowledge across the lifespan.

NRSG 10080 – Professional Practice Pregraduate Experience

(Pre-requisites: WORK10103)

(Corequisites: NRSG 10071, NRSG 10079)

During this 280-hour experience, students will assume the responsibilities of a beginning practitioner, according to the Practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario, within an interprofessional health care team (IPHCT) in a preceptored experience.
