Progression and Graduation Requirements

Progression Requirements

The standard passing mark in each course is 50% (equivalent to a D grade or 1.0 grade points) unless otherwise stated. Certain courses require minimums greater than 50% and/or have mandatory components to achieve a passing grade.

Students are required to complete any pre-requisites before enrolling in a course. Failing a course with a co-requisite may require repeating both courses.

Students are expected to achieve, each academic term a Term Grade Point Average (TGPA) of at least 2.0 to remain in Good Academic Standing. Students who do not achieve the minimum TGPA will be placed on either Conditional or Probationary Standing. Continued unsatisfactory academic performance may require the student to be placed on suspension or debarment.

Academic Standings
Students who meet School or program standards are considered to be in Good Academic Standing. Students whose academic record does not meet School or program standards are subject to the academic warnings of Conditional Academic Standing, Probationary Academic Standing, Academic Suspension, and Academic Debarment in a specific program or major for academic reasons, such as failure to receive a passing grade or minimum grade requirements in a course attempted or the cumulative grade point average.

The standings are determined based on a full-time enrolment of a minimum of seventy percent of the course load for a given semester and are defined as:

Good Academic Standing (GS)
All School or program standards have been met or exceeded. These include a minimum term average of 2.0 and a pass in all courses taken, but may be higher for some programs.

Conditional (CS)
A student will initially be placed on Conditional Academic Standing if their term grade point average (GPA) falls between 1.00 and 1.99 or they have failed a course in that term.

Probationary (PB)
A student will be placed on Probationary Academic Standing if, while on Conditional Academic Standing, their term grade point average (GPA) falls between 1.00 and 1.99, or he/she fails a course in the semester. A student will be placed on Probationary Academic Standing if at the conclusion of any semester his/her term grade point average (GPA) falls below 1.00.

Academic Suspension (AS)
Academic Suspension will result when a student on Probationary Standing maintains a term grade point average (GPA) of 1.99 or lower or fails a course in the semester. Such students will be suspended from their program of study for a minimum of two semesters and may be permitted to resume their program upon completion of the suspension.

Academic Debarment (AD)
A second Academic Suspension from the same program will result in a two-year Academic Debarment from that program with the option of re-applying for admission. During this period, the student will be permitted to apply to another program at the college.

Re-admission to a Program
Students on Academic Suspension may apply for re-admission to the same program after a period of two semesters following the date of suspension. Re-admission is not guaranteed. Students are subject to the current published admission requirements. If re-admitted, the student will be placed on Probationary Academic Standing.

Program Transfers
Students on Academic Suspension, Probationary, or Conditional Academic Standing may apply to transfer to another program at the College. If accepted to the new program, they will maintain their academic standing unless they are on Suspension in which case they will be placed on Probationary Academic Standing in the new program.

Program Completion Requirements

1. Students must successfully complete all “PNUR”, “ANAT”, and “PATH” courses in the semester they are in before they can progress to take nursing courses in the next semester. (Refer to program model routes) A student who does not successfully complete any one of his/her required nursing courses as scheduled must contact the Centennial Success Advisor (MyCA) prior to registration for the next semester.

2. It is within a student’s right to drop a course or courses; however, the student must meet with the Centennial Success Advisor (MyCA) to discuss this issue. Students must realize that registration in the dropped course(s) in the following semester is dependent on available space. There is no guarantee that the student will be able to register in the dropped course(s) in the following semester.

3. A “C” (minimum of 60%)  grade is required for promotion for all theoretical courses within the program, including the English (COMM) and General Education (GNED) courses.
a. All clinical application courses will be graded on a pass/fail basis.
b. PNUR250 must be completed on a full time basis in both the full-time and flexible model routes. Prior to the pre-graduate semester (PNUR250), all General Education (GNED) and English (COMM) courses in the Practical Nursing Program must be completed with a passing minimum “C” grade.

4. If a student is unsuccessful twice in the same “PNUR”, “ANAT”,” or “PATH” course(s), a third repeat would require the approval of the Chair of Nursing. If a student is unsuccessful in the course on the third attempt, he/she will be suspended from the program and will not be eligible for readmission.

5. There is no guarantee that a course will be available the following semester if a student diverts from the model route due to dropping or not being successful in a course(s).
a. If there is an interruption of two semesters or more in a student’s progression from PNUR105 to successful completion of PNUR125 for any reason, the student will be required to take the Practical Nursing 1 Lab Refresher course (PNUR101). The purpose of this course is to maintain clinical competency of basic nursing skills (introduced in PNUR105) for students who are delayed in their model route. PNUR101 is offered as a Continuing Education course and should be taken within the semester immediately preceding PNUR125.

Note: A student who registers into PNUR125 but withdraws before completion of at least 30 clinical patient contact hours must take PNUR 101. Students must contact the Student Success Advisor to register for this course. The student must achieve a passing grade in the lab refresher course in order to proceed to PNUR125

6. Regarding Program Transfers: Students must meet with the Centennial Success Advisor (MyCA) to discuss and/or have approved any program transfer:
a. Semester 1 students have the option to transfer from the Fulltime program into the Flexible program prior to commencing semester 2.
b. In order for a semester 2 student to be eligible to transfer from the Fulltime program into the Flexible program, the student must have first completed all GNED and COMM courses as required for the PN Program.

7. Promotion from course to course is governed by the prerequisites stated for the individual courses. All courses, including General Education and English courses, in the Practical Nursing Program must be completed with a minimum “C” or “P” grade for eligibility for graduation from the Practical Nursing Program at Centennial College and for eligibility to write the Regulatory Exam- Practical Nurse (REx-PN). The Practical Nursing Program must be completed within a maximum of four (4) academic years from the time of initial enrolment in Semester 1.

Graduation Requirements

Students must pass all courses on the model route and any other program requirements, including experiential learning (e.g., co-operative education, field/clinical placements, etc.), in order to graduate.

Students must also achieve an overall program Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 to be eligible to graduate.

Students must have completed at least 25% of the program at Centennial College, excluding prior learning assessment and recognition (PLAR) and transfer credit (TCR).

Students must complete the requirements of the program in effect at the time of graduation unless the Dean or designate approves alternative arrangements in writing. This requirement includes any changes made to future semesters during the student’s studies but does not include changes in semesters that have already been completed unless required for the future semester courses.
