3 Placement Eligibility & Pre-Placement Procedures
Placement Eligibility
Some programs such as Office Administration and Business Analysis will require students to meet eligibility requirements to participate in a placement. These eligibility requirements may involve academic and/or non-academic requirements (NARs). For more information regarding the specific eligibility requirements of your program’s placement, please speak with your Field Placement Support Officer.
Students from programs such as Office Administration who do not meet the placement eligibility requirements will complete a simulation in lieu of the placement.
Student Permit and Co-op Work Permit (International Students)
International students are required to have a valid study permit and Co-op Work Permit in order to complete a placement. Students are required to provide their Field Placement Support Officer with a copy of a valid Co-op Work Permit via the Co-op Work Permit for International Students (WIL) webform. Only once a valid work permit is received, are international students authorized to seek placements both on and off campus.
For instructions on how to apply for a Co-op Work Permit, please download the Co-op Work Permit Application Guide.
Please contact International Services for guidance on how to apply for a Co-op Work Permit.
CareerReady Access
CareerReady is Mohawk College’s portal for Experiential Learning. Students will have training and access to CareerReady when they are registered in their placement course. Within CareerReady, students will see several “steps” which are associated with the placement requirements.
It is the student’s responsibility to maintain the confidentiality of all information on CareerReady. Information and placement opportunities must not be shared with others.
Driver’s License
In some cases, a valid Driver’s License and clean driver’s abstract may be a requirement for the placement. These factors are especially important when considering placement locations.
Transportation
It is the responsibility of the student to arrange for transportation to and from the placement site. Students should consider transportation prior to applying or expressing interest for a placement opportunity. Students are responsible for the financial costs related to transportation to and from work.
Students on placement may be eligible to receive an HSR Bus Pass from the MSA. In some programs (Human Resources Management and Business Analysis), the placement may extend beyond a typical semester period. Students in these programs may need to complete additional steps including an opt-in form and pay the bus pass fee to receive a voucher for the semester. Please contact msareception@mohawkcollege.ca for more information.
Additional Placement Requirements – Preplacement Services
Some placement opportunities including those from Office Administration Health may require additional clearances as part of the pre-placement process. Students may be asked to obtain police clearances and clean driver’s abstracts as a condition of the placement. Some employers also perform security clearances, criminal reference checks, medical assessments, and drug testing. Students may also be requested to supply their own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and complete non-academic requirements (NARs) through Preplacement Services.
