Objective

This experiment introduces students to applied atomic physics. Students will learn about the atomic structure of Rubidium, and how it can be exploited to drive nearly the entire population of excited Rubidium atoms to a single atomic state. This process, called optical pumping, is a popular technique in atomic physics experiments, particularly ones that aim for a high level of precision.
