X-ray Diffraction

Warning

This experiment requires students to have done the microwave diffraction experiment (2-D Bragg scattering), and preferably to have also done the quantum analogs experiment (1-D Bragg scattering) in order to get the most of this X-Ray diffraction experiment (3-D Bragg scattering).

This experiment is run from the McMaster Analytical X-Ray Diffraction Facility some time in November. A maximum of six students can sign up per lab session. Sign up for this experiment as soon as you can so we can give the X-Ray facility as much notice as possible that we will be using the apparatus that day.

Part of your time in this lab will consist of a presentation about X-ray diffraction and the diffractometer and software that is used in the facility. Students may not get the most of this experiment if they are learning about those concepts for the first time during that presentation. Please read this manual and check out the list of links in Section 3.3 in order to be adequately prepared.
