Lab Intro Doc

Welcome to 2B03 Labs!

Your labs take place in BSB B110. Please check Mosiac to find which lab section you are in, and please come to the lab during that specified time. Labs take place during the weeks shown in Table 1.

If you looked at the course syllabus, you will have noticed that the labs start before you actually start doing circuits in lecture. DON’T PANIC!!!1! The labs focus on learning to use circuit instrumentation, taking measurements, and interpreting results. The lab manuals provide the small amount of background knowledge you need to succeed in the lab. If you are interested, here are two helpful resources for understanding circuits:

  1. The Hydraulic Analogy. This analogy of voltage and current in the form of something more intuitive: water flow and pressure.
  2. Practical Electronics for Inventors by Paul Sherz and Simon Monk. This text is amazing! By far my favourite resource for circuits and electronics components. It has way too much detail, especially the newer edition, but it explains the basic stuff very well.

You will do four experiments over the course of the term (about one every other week with a make-up session at the end). Each lab has three components:

  1. Simulating a circuit in the prelab assignment.
  2. Building circuits in the lab.
  3. Doing some calculations and/or fitting some data with a trend.
