PRE-LAB QUESTIONS
Please complete the following questions before coming to the lab, and bring your answers with you to the lab:
- What does it mean for a circuit element to have an internal resistance? As an example, how does the internal resistance of an ammeter affect the measurement of current?
- For a given current I and internal resistance R, how would you model the voltage from the internal resistance of a circuit element? Hint: how do you model the voltage from a regular resistor?
- For an inductor, how does the electromotive force relate to the current and inductance of that inductor? Please provide an equation.
Set yourself the following objectives for this lab:
- Experimentally examine an inductor and how it is connected to a circuit
- Interpret the effects of internal resistance on circuit analysis from various circuit elements
- Experimentally measuring the internal resistance of various circuit elements
- Charging an inductor through a series RL circuit to determine the time constant and inductance
- Discharging an inductor through a parallel RL circuit and interpreting the effects of internal resistance
