INTRODUCTION
Circuits are used in every electronic device around us, such as computers, smart phones, vehicles, and even toasters. As future engineers, you will be expected to understand the basic aspects of circuit analysis and how different kinds of circuits can be used for different practical applications. In the 1E03 labs, we will explore the basic principles guiding circuit analysis and the fundamental physics underlying various circuit elements under a Direct Current (DC) voltage source.
One of the goals in this lab is to apply Ohm’s law to circuits with various combinations of resistors and see how they behave under various voltage sources. Just as we did in the 1D03 labs, we will use the PASCO Capstone software to analyse our results. This software and hardware have the capability to act as a voltage generator while simultaneously, working as a digital multimeter. The Capstone software allows you to easily record your results and save them in a format that can be imported and analysed in Excel.
The currents used in the 1E03 are low enough that you do not need to worry about accidentally shocking yourself. Regardless of this fact, it is always important to deal with circuits and electricity in a serious and safe manner. Part of this means making sure you are not completing a circuit through your body. There is more information regarding safety protocols with circuits in the reference manual.
During these labs, we will be using safe block pieces which make connecting circuit elements more intuitive and safer. While working with these elements, make a mental note of how different circuit elements look in real life, such as resistors. They are probably drastically different in design compared to what you might have imagined. Many people live their whole lives without knowing what a resistor looks like. As prospective engineers, you will have many opportunities to work with various circuit elements, and design/build many remarkable devices or infrastructure.
