PRE-LAB QUESTIONS

Please complete the following questions before coming to the lab, and bring your answers with you to the lab:

  1. What does it mean for a circuit element to have an internal resistance? As an example, how does the internal resistance of an ammeter affect the measurement of current?

  1. For a given current I and internal resistance R, how would you model the voltage from the internal resistance of a circuit element? Hint: how do you model the voltage from a regular resistor?

  1. For an inductor, how does the electromotive force relate to the current and inductance of that inductor? Please provide an equation.

Set yourself the following objectives for this lab:

  • Experimentally examine an inductor and how it is connected to a circuit
  • Interpret the effects of internal resistance on circuit analysis from various circuit elements
  • Experimentally measuring the internal resistance of various circuit elements
  • Charging an inductor through a series RL circuit to determine the time constant and inductance
  • Discharging an inductor through a parallel RL circuit and interpreting the effects of internal resistance
