Exercise 4: Discussion

Exercise 4.1 (5 marks)

Imagine that it’s a hot summer day, so Physics Girl decides she wants a refreshing drink. She pours herself a cup of water, and then places an ice cube in, as pictured below. She then forgets about her drink, and leaves it out for the ice to melt. When Physics Girl comes back to her drink, the water level has remained the same.

Explain why the water level did not change when the ice melted.

Please keep your answer to half a page or less and feel free to use words, equations, diagrams or all three, whatever helps you explain the physics.

Helpful hints:

Given Archimedes’ principle and what you learned in this lab, how much water does the ice cube displace when floating?

Before you’re finished!

This is the end, be sure you have completed Exercise 4.1 on Crowdmark for grading.

Congratulations on completing Lab 3!

Make sure you’ve handed in all graded components to Crowdmark.
