Chapter 6: If I Could I Would

This tool is designed to allow the focus person a place to dream.  These should be big and grand dreams!

This is a bucket list activity.  What dreams/goals do you want to accomplish before you leave this world? Really help the focus person dream here. Don’t settle for answers like “going to Tim Hortons daily”!

Watch this video of a Ted Talk presented by a High School student on the importance of creating a Bucket List!

Person Centered Plan Task

Create an “If I Could… I Would….” List with your Focus Person. Ideally, this list includes images and other forms of inspiration.

Once created:

  1. Update their One Page Profile if there is any important information discovered with this tool.
  2. Ask these questions: a) If you have a long list, what would be the top three, the most important things that you want to do? b) For each of those three things ask: What would it take for you to do this? What could you do? What would other people need to help with?
  3.  Record notes for actions.  These will become possible goals for the person in their Person Centered Plan.
  4. See an example of Friday Knights “If I Could…. I Would…” Tool below.

Image of a bucket list titled 'Friday Knight Love Bucket List' featuring a small, fluffy dog peeking out of a wooden bucket. The list includes aspirations like 'Get my Trick Dog title,' 'Go on a hiking vacation,' 'Explore a farm,' 'Have a little brother or sister,' and 'Run free with friends the same size as me.' The text 'If I Could, I Would...' appears at the bottom, emphasizing the dog's dreams and wishes.

If I could, I would – Questions to Consider

a) If you have a long list, what would be the top three most important things that you want to do?

  • Trick Dog Title – I have my novice title.  I need Intermediate and advanced next.
  • Hiking Vacation – I love walking in the summer or fall in the woods and going to all new locations – I can go into stores in my travel bag that mom carries, so I can go EVERYWHERE with Mom and Dad even after hiking.
  • Explore a Farm – I have seen pigs and cows but I never got to run around and sniff.

b) For each of those three things, ask: What would it take for you to do this? What could you do? What would other people need to help with?

Trick dog Title – Mom needs to work with me daily on the next set of 15 tricks for my Intermediate title next. Daily practice will get me there.

Hiking Vacation – Mom and Dad need to plan a vacation where they bring me like a couple of years ago. Last year they went without me!  I would like to go anywhere that I can walk, sniff, check out some water, see other dogs and stay overnight in hotels.

Explore a Farm – There are a lot of farms around here.  I would need to be sure I can be safe and not hurt by the animals if I were to be put down on the ground out of Mom’s arms.  Maybe start with visiting a fenced side so I can look at the animals and then work my way up.

NOTES FOR ACTIONS:

Consider the ideas above for his top three ideas.  These should land within his plan. (at least one or 2 of them)
