Section One: The Fundamentals

A) Keywords

Exercise 1:

Provide a brief definition of one of the padlet keywords for this week.

Equity is when people are provided the resources and given an equal opportunity. It is different than equality because that means everyone is given the same thing. Equity gives different people different things to get everyone on an equal level. When I think of the word equity I always think back to the image of 3 men behind the fence for a baseball game. In the first image each man is on the ground. The tallest one can see over the fence, the middle one is on his tip toes struggling to see, and the shortest one cant see anything. In the next image the shortest one is standing on 2 boxes, the middle one is on one box, and the tallest is still on the ground making sure they all can see the game equally. That is what equity is.

B) The Social Significance of Aging in Sport

Exercise 2: Notebook Prompt

How is old age popularly represented today? Find an image online that you think exemplifies one defining attitude towards old age and paste in your notebook below with a brief explanation of what this image means to you.

Old age is usually represented in one of two ways. It’s either seen as negative and associated with sickness, fragility, and dependence or positively with the growing trend of showcasing older people as active and finding new hobbies. The image I selected was old women exercising outdoors cause it shows how old people can be active while also enjoying the outdoors and nature

Exercise 3: Notebook Prompt

What does the article (referencing another study by Dionigi) mean by its statement that sport can help aging people to simultaneously “accept and resist the ageing process” (572)? Respond by audio or text and find paste two images sourced online into your notebook showing how sport might help aging people to both accept and resist the aging process.

The article shows how older people can accept and resist the ageing process by acknowledging their physical changes that come with age but staying motivated and doing what they still can. It also shows how engaging in physical activity allows older adults maintain strength and independence. Through sport, they resist that age leads to less capabilities.

Exercise 4: Notebook Prompt

Who are the groups less likely to have extensive opportunities to take part in sports, according to Pike? How does privilege factor into aging and sport? (200 words max)

According to Pike, groups less likely to have extensive opportunities to take part in sports include older adults with less wealth, disabilities, and/or come from marginalized communities. They face barriers such as limited access to facilities, financial constraints, and social stereotypes. Privilege plays a significant role in aging and sport because it shapes who has the time, resources, and support to stay active.

Exercise 5: Padlet Discussion

Why do you think age discrimination is “reported more than any form of prejudice” with older people presented as a threat to social values and interests? Feel welcome to use video in your responses. Paste your comments (or transcript of your video) below!

I think “ageism” is reported more than any form of prejudice for two reasons.

  1. Everyone gets old. Getting old is inevitable so in comparison to any other things people could get discriminated for there is more old people then there is anything else. So more people means more cases, its simple math.
  2. Since everyone gets old and we view it as a normal thing we say things we probably shouldn’t since we figure everyone knows it. Also since we see everyone get old we tend to stereotype old people as frail and inactive so we limit the older people that are actually very active and able.

B) Older Women and Sport

Exercise 6: Notebook Prompt

What differences do you see in these ads? Which one is more inclusive? How is age represented or not represented in each?  Answer these questions in your notebook.

In the first Nike Ad it would appear age isn’t represented since it doesn’t go out of its way to show it however it is pretty easy to see that there is no old people in the commercial. They did a good job being inclusive to men, women, disabled people, and lgbtq people but the oldest person was Lebron James who probably wasn’t even 40 years old at the time so it kind of shows that old people don’t belong in sports.

The second ad showed regular people not just professional athletes like the first Ad. It was a little more inclusive about age since it showed a little bit older women, seeing as they were mothers and all. Overall, it was a pretty inclusive ad in terms of women, race, and ability levels but I still didn’t see a single senior citizen in there.

Exercise 7: Notebook Prompt

In her article, “Assessing the sociology of sport: On age and ability,” Elizabeth Pike references a “trend towards a ‘feminisation of ageing’, with many women living longer than men” (573).  Do you agree that aging has been “feminized” in this way? How?  Answer these questions in your notebook.

I agree that aging has been “feminized”. Statistically, women live longer than men so they make up a larger amount of old people. As a result media often highlights and public health approaches are centered around women.

This can be seen in the way aging is marketed: anti-aging products, wellness programs, and media messages about staying youthful are often targeted more towards older women than men. Older women are also more likely to take on caregiving roles or face financial insecurity due to lifelong gender inequalities which makes getting old very tough on them

Section Three: Module Mini Assignment

“The Great Peterborough Pickleball Debacle” Case Study
Using the Pike article in Section One as a reference, analyze popular depictions/discussions/critiques of pickleball as a “sport trend” that has proved enormously appealing to older segments of the population.
1) Describe the problem as you understand it. Read this article for background and source two  other media /social media pieces.
2) Leaving aside the clear issues with process and priorities, consider how the older pickleball athletes/advocates are represented in the media/social media discussions of the issue. Is ageism a factor in these representations? Where do you see a neoliberal agenda around aging at work in these stories (provide examples and refer back to the Pike article for guidance). Include any images you think may be relevant?  (300 words)
Worth: 5%
Due: April 15th along with module work
