Learning Objectives

The game promotes the application of knowledge and skills related to the assessment of an older adult and transitions in their care.The learning objectives of this virtual gaming simulation are to:

  • Apply knowledge of physical and psychosocial assessments related to the older adult living in their home.
  • Identify normal and abnormal findings including variations and potential complications during a home care visit.
  • Conduct medication reconciliation (comprehensive review of medications).
  • Demonstrate therapeutic nurse – client relationships when caring for an older adult and their family caregiver.

Background to the Virtual Gaming Simulation

Helen Kumar is a 76-year-old female who lives alone in a single floor home. She has been retired for 16 years from her profession in human resources. She has two daughters. Her daughter Kate lives close by while her daughter Kiera lives far away. Helen Kumar is having difficulty caring for herself at home and managing daily tasks of home maintenance (ie. cleaning, cooking). Her daughter, Kate, made the referral to homecare. You are Sylvia Santos, a registered nurse, who is doing a home visit which includes an assessment on Helen Kumar.

How to Play the Virtual Gaming Simulation

Watch the video unfold. You will assume the role of a clinical nurse completing a client assessment.
Occasionally, the video will pause, and you will be asked to respond to questions.
Choose your responses carefully because your choices will affect how the story unfolds.
The goal is to get to the end of the story, answering as few questions as possible.
The best possible result is 12 out of 12. There is no limit on the number of times you can play this game.
The game progresses forward only; there is no option to go back to a previous decision point. The only way to revisit a decision point is to restart the game.
At the end of the game, a summary report including your answers will be generated. This summary can be downloaded and saved to your computer.
You can pause the game at any time by clicking on the video or pressing the spacebar
You can turn captions on or switch to full screen, by selecting “Game Options” from the menu.
The game uses high resolution videos and requires high-speed internet.
The game takes about 30–60 minutes to complete.
