3 Prebrief for Learners
It is important for you, as a learner, to complete this pre-brief prior to commencing the virtual gaming simulation (VGS) so that you are prepared for the educational content in the VGS. This pre-brief will also and ensure common understanding of the expectations pertaining to VGS.
Item | Information |
Prework | 1. Review the assigned readings related to homecare assessments, caregiver stress, communication with clients who are hearing impaired.
2. Review steps to conduct a medication reconciliation, a clock drawing assessment and a timed get up and go test. 3. Review the following dieases processes: diabetes, dyslipidemia, season allergies (pollen, ragweed), hypothyroidism and mycocardial infraction. |
Learning Objectives | Review the learning objectives carefully you know what can expect to learn by the end of the VGS. |
Expectations (process for whole experience) | It takes between 30-60 minutes to play the VGS to completion. The debrief experience will take another 30-60 minutes (see individual debriefing guide). It is expected that you should complete the debrief as soon as possible after the VGS experience. |
Technology | The VGS is enabled by H5P which requires a strong bandwidth. If the videos load slowly, the bandwidth needs to be stronger. |
Confidentiality | During the VGS, we ask you to maintain confidentiality, as this permits other students who have not played the VGS to do so without any preconceived expectations or knowledge of the content and allows for a positive learning experience. |
Fiction Contract | A fiction contract is used to encourage you to play the VGS as if was a real clinical experience.
During the following VGS, you will interact with different actors within the homecare environment. Virtual simulation fosters active engagement in a relatively safe environment. As the developers of the VGS, we do all we can to make the simulation as real as possible. We do recognize that this scenario is not real, but based on a potential homecare visit. We ask you to engage in the simulation with healthcare professionals and the patient as if they were real. This approach will give you the best possible active learning opportunity. |
Psychological Safety | The virtual gaming simulation is designed for mature learners who are healthcare workers. Should you have any unsettled feelings before, during, or after the VGS, speak with your educator or contact counseling services at your institution. |
