Test Banks with Generative AI

Creating Test Banks Using Generative AI – ChatGPT

Creating test banks using ChatGPT in a format that can be uploaded to FOL can be accomplished using the studio’s custom GPT trained for this purpose: Respondus Quiz Formatter. First assemble the textbook content you with to generate the questions for. If you are generating questions for a Pressbooks chapter, first go through the individual pages and copy them into a document. You can then select the entire contents to paste into your prompt in the GPT. Use a prompt similar to the following to generate your quiz:

Please generate 60 multiple-choice questions for college students based on the textbook content which will follow. Here’s the textbook content: [PASTE TEXTBOOK CONTENT HERE]

Note that you should monitor the output to ensure it conforms to the Respondus format necessary to upload the quiz in FOL. Although the Respondus Quiz Formatter has been trained to follow this format, sometimes it might deviate and need to be corrected. Here are the format requirements:

  • Each question starts with a number followed by a period “.” or a parenthesis “)”, and a space before the question text.
  • Each answer option starts with a capital letter (A, B, C, etc.), followed by a period “.” or a parenthesis “)”, and a space before the answer text.
  • The correct answer is marked with an asterisk “*” directly before the letter (e.g., *B.) with no additional spaces or symbols.

Here is an example question is the correct format:

1. What distinguishes sustainable risk management from traditional risk management?
A. Focus on short-term, easily quantifiable risks
B. Emphasis on financial risks alone
*C. Integrating sustainability considerations
D. Ignoring environmental impacts

It is advisable to request more questions than you intend to use in the test, allowing you to choose the best ones and weed out anything that doesn’t fit your needs. Also, remain open to the idea that you may have to experiment a bit, varying your prompts to obtain the best result.
