2 Core Beliefs & Values
Belief statement:
As a student nurse, I believe that honesty, empathy, accountability, and kindness are traits that are essential to incorporate into nursing to provide all patients with the best possible outcome and promote health and wellness.
Honesty:
Personally, I believe that honesty goes a long way. I have the utmost respect for people who are honest and are straight to the point. I believe that honest is an essential personal value in nursing because as a healthcare provider, the expectation is that patients must be honest with us to help determine what the problems are effectively. As a nurse, it should be returned to the patient as they expect the same from healthcare providers. Honesty can eliminate any medical errors on the patient and nurses perspectives and give the patient the best possible outcome.
Empathy:
Empathy is another personal value that I believe is essential in the nursing field. I believe that in order to provide patient-centered care and advocate for the patient’s best possible outcome, a nurse must be empathetic towards the patient and their families. If a nurse is attentive and keeps an open mind to their patient and patient’s families, providing patient-centered care becomes an easy task that allows for the patient to have autonomy and build a trustworthy relationship with their nurse.
Accountability:
Accountability is the second last personal value that I believe is essential in the nursing field. I believe that accountability is very important, especially in healthcare as a nurse. Although it may not seem like it, nurses are humans who can also make mistakes however, taking responsibility and accountability for those mistakes allows for us to learn from our mistakes and continue to build trustworthy relationships with patients/patient’s families. Being accountable for your own actions as a nurse also allows for patient safety to be prioritized as we want to avoid harm towards the patient.
Kindness:
Kindness is the last personal value that I believe is essential in the nursing field. I believe that everyone regardless of backgrounds and beliefs should be treated with kindness. As a nurse, you must be able to build trustworthy relationships with your patients and patient’s families and I strongly believe that, that cannot happen unless you value kindness. Trying to build a trustworthy relationship with someone who is unkind is extremely challenging for both parties and can affect the patient and their health in a nursing setting.
