About this Guide

Course design is an important aspect of teaching and learning. How we design our courses contributes to good teaching and learning by:

  • Establishing goals for our students
  • Determining how students will show that they have met those goals
  • Building a course that supports students in achieving those outcomes

The different aspects of good course design function together to help build an effective learning experience for students. These approaches can be applied to face to face, online, or hybrid courses in any subject area.

This resource is intended for:

  • Instructors who are developing a new course
  • Instructors who are redesigning an existing course
  • Divisions engaged in program development
  • Programs involved in program review and renewal

Through sections on Course Outlines and Teaching and Learning Plans (TLPs), you will be guided through the redesign or development of a course and the creation of the two primary documents that guide and inform teaching and learning at Niagara College.
