8 Introduction to Adaptive and Assistive Technology
Purpose of Assistive Technology in Education
Assistive technology, commonly known as AT refers to any device, software, or equipment that helps individuals with disabilities or limitations perform tasks that might otherwise be challenging. This technology spans a wide range, from simple tools like magnifying glasses or pencil grips to complex computer software and communication systems.
The primary goal of AT in educational settings is to enhance student independence and productivity, enabling them to participate more fully in their courses. By providing the necessary tools and resources, AT helps bridge the gap for students with disabilities, ensuring they have equal opportunities to succeed academically.
