Understanding Testing Accommodations
Definition and Purpose
Testing accommodations are designed to allow students with disabilities to demonstrate their acquired knowledge accurately. They ensure that students with functional limitations can compete on an equitable level, allowing for the accurate measurement of their true knowledge.
Why might students choose to not access their testing accommodations?
It should be noted that just because a student has registered for accommodations does not mean they must use them. Students can choose when, and on what tests, they would like to use their testing accommodations. It’s quite possible that a student may be very comfortable with a specific testing topic and choose to write in the classroom – that said, should they choose to write in the classroom they are unlikely to receive their extra time due to classroom or faculty availability.
