17 Effective Learning Strategies
What Are Effective Learning Strategies?
Effective learning strategies are a set of tools to maximize the learning potential. There is no right way to learn. Once students build up their toolkit of strategies, they can mix and match or use stand-alone tools based on their strengths to overcome unique barriers. Ineffective strategies can be time-consuming and contribute to difficulty in prioritization, understanding and time management. Effective learning strategies maximize the learner’s time.

Rapport & Capable Learners
If a student is struggling in class, it doesn’t necessarily mean they have a learning disability or that they don’t care about their studies. It could be because they lack strategies to effectively take in, process, remember, and apply the learning. It can be challenging to prioritize and make time to gain learning strategies and training for students when they’re attempting to balance many things at once. It’s important for students to know that there is support available. Faculty are integral to students accessing and utilizing available supports within our school community. Harnessing the rapport built to proactively refer students to workshops and offerings within the college can bridge the gap between the classroom and school services and assist students in setting up for success.
Learning Centre Services for All Students
To promote universal design, the Learning Strategists invite all students to attend our Breakfast Club and workshops to assist in lessening this gap through training and practice. We believe in utilizing a gradual release of responsibility method that gives students a hand-in rather than a hand-out. The Learning Centre also has professional tutors available to meet with students 1-1 to provide general learning strategy training that teaches students to pull, comprehend and apply content.
Services for Students with Accommodations
Students with identified learning disabilities or accommodations can book a one-on-one appointment with a learning strategist through the MyGCC section of the Student Tab of MyCambrian. Students gain strategies to alleviate the gap using a holistic, strength-based approach to lessen additional barriers presented due to their additional challenges.
