GDE/PME 851 Creating Connection in Culturally Diverse Schools

A seminar course that introduces students to critical social theories, current approaches to cultural analysis, theories of identity, sub-cultural positionings, to the practice and implications of social/cultural theories and global issues.

The central goal of this course is for learners to apply culturally responsive approaches to working with diverse students and their families. One of the first steps in this process is to understand what diversity actually means and how it is relevant for your school or organizational context.

Learning Outcomes: students will be able to…

  • Define what the word diversity means
  • Describe the demographic trends and diversity in Canada
  • Examine the changing demographic and social landscape of Ontario
  • Understand how globalization has influenced patterns of international migration
  • Explore the implications of these demographics for your geographical and organizational context
