Public history brought me a new understanding of the amount of thought put into the things around me. A major focus of this class was on the Peterborough area, examining how the government and other local organizations try to transmit information about the past to the public, through statues, plaques, or historical buildings. While I have always been a person who loves historical things, like plaques and museums (and have repeatedly forced people to turn the car around so I could go and read a historical monument or plaque), this class gave me a new understanding of the amount of work, thought, and collaboration gone into erecting each of these methods of historical education.
