The second half of this class was very similar to the first half. The structure remained the same, the events we were examining just shifted. Mostly, we looked at more recent history in the second half of the class, something that I have always been more interested in than ancient history. As such, one of my biggest takeaways from this class was meeting the faculty within the department as they taught their modules.
With each module having a different instructor, it gave me the opportunity to learn the way that they teach, and then decide if this was a good way of learning for me. In the following year, I was then able to put faces and teaching styles to the names on the course calendar, and select my courses based on knowing this information about the instructors.
This class not only served as the tasting platter of instructors, but also of periods and places in history. Every module was just a short introduction to an event, just going slightly deeper than a well written Wikipedia article would, but it was a chance to decide what areas in history I liked, and what periods I was interested in. As such, my final essay for this class looked at the history of the Orange Order in Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland in the late 20th and early 21st century has since become a major interest of mine.
