What if I am (or will be) absent from placement?

Regardless of the reason of your absence, you need to follow the absence reporting protocol outlined below. 

• Contact your facility preceptor immediately. During your initial meeting, find out their preferred method of communication (email, phone).
• Notify the facility and assigned unit of your absence
• Notify your clinical supervisor of the absence on the day of the absence

Be Professional! Students MUST report the absence at least 2 hours before your shift to all parties above. 

Note: You will need to make up all missed placement days. Determine when you will make them up and ensure that the time works for your preceptor.

• All required 168 hours of clinical and assignments must be completed by the end of the associated 7-week term.
• If you have COVID symptoms or have been exposed to the virus, follow your placement agency’s reporting/monitoring/testing guidelines. You will need to follow their direction for returning to placement and will need to inform your Clinical Supervisor your return to clinical date.

You will be evaluated on your attendance and time management, and this impacts other areas of your performance. You must complete all 168 hours of your placement within the allotted 7-week period to pass the Professional Practice course.

Please note: If you do not complete the required number of placement hours by the end of the associated term, you will not be eligible to pass the Professional Practice. Missing 2 or more days without timely notification, or a breach in the absence reporting protocol, will result in a mandatory meeting with your Clinical Supervisor and Professional Practice Coordinator. It may result in a termination of the placement.

Be proactive! Avoid scheduling appointments or vacations during placement days. Sometimes an absence from a placement day is unavoidable. Proper communication and documentation of your time is part of essential employable practices. It is not permitted to miss placement or leave placement early due to other commitments. Please plan accordingly.

Do holidays count as placement days?

If your placement day falls on a statutory holiday, this will not count as a placement day unless you are attending.
