Chapter 4: Roles and Responsibilities
Student Responsibilities
Student responsibilities include:
- Send a preplacement email to the Field Mentor at the field placement site within 48 hours of receiving field placement information from the FPS. Students will ask for any additional preplacement requirements, pre-reading assignments and determine where and when to meet with the Field Mentor to complete a preplacement interview
- Complete an in person or virtual preplacement interview if required by the placement agency
- Locate and arrange transportation and/or accommodations for the duration of the placement
- Sign and complete the ABS Employer Health and Safety, ABS Field Placement Confirmation, and Intrusive Procedure Policy webforms on the 1st day of placement (See chapter 9)
- Discuss their roles and responsibilities and those of the Field Mentors on the 1st day of placement
- Conduct themselves as workers within the field placement site subject to the rules, regulations, and standards of professional conduct placed on other workers within that setting. In the event the student contravenes the ethics and/or policies and procedures of the field placement site, the student’s placement may be terminated immediately
- Consult the FPS immediately with any problems or questions that arise regarding the placement that cannot be resolved with the Field Mentor
- Advise the FPS of any significant changes in placement which may impact their learning experience including a change in Field Mentor, learning activities or oversight. Students are to monitor their placements and take responsibility for ensuring that they are in an optimal learning situation. This includes demonstrating problem solving strategies to support learning outcomes. A student is not to terminate a placement without prior consultation with the FPS.
- Work the schedule they have negotiated with the Field Mentor. Any adjustments to this agreement for any reason must be negotiated in advance with the Field Mentor and the FPS should be advised immediately
- Demonstrate professionalism and commitment to the field placement site through full attendance and punctuality. In the event of illness or personal emergencies, students will notify the Field Mentor as soon as possible before their expected arrival date and time, in order to prevent undue disruption to the field placement site, its staff, and learners. The FPS must also be informed of any absences prior to their occurrence.
- Take the regular College holidays and relevant religious holidays that occur on the field workdays. A 7-hour credit will be provided to students for college holidays.
- Accept and use mentorship including attending weekly scheduled meetings. Students will prepare any documentation (e.g., data sheets, graphs, reports, audio-visual tapes, materials, resources etc.) that the Field Mentor requests for discussion during meetings
- Students will seek and accept constructive and positive feedback from the Field Mentor on a regular basis and develop skills in maximizing their placement experience. Students will initiate setting and review of objectives with the Field Mentor. Students should share their professional goals as submitted to College Faculty with their Field Mentor.
- Submit in writing all reports and assignments as described in the course outline and identified by the field placement site on time.
- Submit self and Field Mentor final evaluations to Mohawk College on the students last day of placement once the documents have been reviewed and signed by both the student and Field Mentor
- Students will complete and have the Field Mentor or delegate sign the Weekly Placement Experience Form to document placement hours. The student will submit the documents on a weekly basis as required by the FPS. Seminar Faculty will not assign grades for fieldwork until all required placement hours are confirmed by signed placement worksheets.
- Students are required to wear their Mohawk College One Card while they are out on Field Placement as a form of identification.
- Students are expected to participate in and facilitate routines (i.e., snack, lunch, light tidying, preparing program spaces). Students may require assistance and support during these routines but as the field placement progresses, students are expected to initiate routines
- Students are expected to attend field placement during Professional Development or Activity days and attend meetings or trainings as determined appropriate by the placement site
- Accept responsibility as a team member of the Field Placement site
- Maintain confidentiality (re: learners, caregivers, agency staff, peers, placement site, college faculty and staff)
- Complete the appropriate number of field placement days/hours by the specified placement end date
- Field placement students are not responsible and should not manage challenging behaviour
- Field placement students are not to be included in ratio and require to be always overseen by a Field Mentor or delegate of the placement site
