Chapter 4: Roles and Responsibilities
Field Placement Specialist (FPS)
The FPS role is an integral component of the fieldwork experience because the FPS provides the link between the Mohawk College and the field placement site. The responsibilities of the FPS include the following:
- Collect information on student preferences for field placements and initiate contact with the Field Mentors email at the beginning of the placement in order to:
- Make certain that the Field Mentor has received and understood all the required forms and their submission deadlines
- Verify start date, days and hours of placement, expected completion date and weekly meeting time for students
- Inform the Field Mentor of future evaluative consultations and possible visits
- Provide the Field Mentor with the College FPS’s email and telephone number in the event of inquiry, concerns, or need of information. The FPS reminds the student of the need to keep the FPS and Seminar Faculty informed should problems arise.
- Visit the field placement site as required to ensure that students are aware of the expectations of their placements and to evaluate their progress
- Respond to concerns of the Field Mentor, to assist and to support the resolution to challenges that may arise in a timely manner
- Recommend withdrawing the student if the placement is not satisfactory or if the student is not performing satisfactorily. A student who is found to be in contravention of the college policy on non-academic behaviour while on campus could also be withdrawn from their field placement. It is important to note that Field Mentors have the ability to terminate a field placement in the event that the student is demonstrating challenges relating to professional and ethical behaviour, jeopardizing client or learner safety, or demonstrates continued challenges with the application of behaviour analytic principles.
- Ensure that the student and Field Mentor sign the Final Evaluation. This signature acknowledges that each has read, though not necessarily agreed with the other person’s comments.
