Chapter 11: Skills to Demonstrate Competency
Field Placement 2
Students completing Field Placement 2 should demonstrate or should be making meaningful progress to demonstrate the following skills:
- Student can readily identify the principles of ABA that are utilized within the placement setting and connects to concepts acquired in class
- Engage in age-appropriate play with learners
- Student attempts and successfully builds rapport and pairs with learners
- Student identifies learners’ strengths, needs and interests
- Participates in data collection either independently or through IOA and graphs data where appropriate
- Student engages in discussions regarding data-based decisions including program continuation and teaching strategies
- Student attempts and then successfully demonstrates an understanding of prompting hierarchies and prompting strategies with a high degree of accuracy
- Student attempts and then successfully understands behavioural contingencies with a high degree of accuracy
- Student attempts and then successfully demonstrates understanding of the functions of behaviour with a high degree of accuracy
- Student responds appropriately to challenging and/or interfering behaviours. It is important to note that students are not responsible and should not manage challenging behaviour
- Student engages in discussions regarding recommendations for environmental modifications and intervention strategies to reduce challenging behaviour or increase desired behaviours
- Student attempts and then successfully establishes instructional control with a high degree of accuracy
- Student attempts and then successfully delivers feedback and reinforcement with a high degree of accuracy
- Student attempts and then successfully completes error correction procedures with a high degree of accuracy
- Student demonstrates the ability to review a skill building program and then independently implements a skill acquisition, maintenance or generalization program (at the discretion of the placement agency) with a high degree of accuracy
