Chapter 12: Student Concerns

What To Do and How To Access Support

The Field Placement Specialist is available to the student and to the Field Mentor if problems arise which cannot be resolved between them. A student must not unilaterally decide to leave a field placement.

If the problems are not resolved informally, the following steps should be followed:

  1. The Field Placement Specialist should be notified of the difficulty. The Field Placement Specialist will then notify the Field Placement Coordinator.
  2. The Field Mentor and/or the student may be asked to prepare a written report concerning the problem(s) or challenge(s).
  3. Meetings will be arranged with the student, the Field Mentor, the Field Placement Specialist and/or the Field Placement Coordinatorat which time a plan for resolution (which may include ending the field placement or the implementation of a Success Contract) will be developed.
  4. The Field Placement Specialist will communicate any decision regarding the student in writing to the student and to the Field Mentor.

Note: In the event the student contravenes the ethical standards, the policies and proceduresof the field placement site and/or jeopardizes the safety of learners, staff or other individuals at the placement site, Mohawk College recognizes the authority of the Field Placement Site/Field Mentor to terminate the field placement immediately.

It is expected that the Field Placement Specialist will be immediately advised of such an occurrence and provided with a written report documenting the particulars of the incident.
