Chapter 11: Skills to Demonstrate Competency
Field Placement 1
Students completing Field Placement 1 should demonstrate or should be making meaningful progress to demonstrate the following skills:
- Student can readily identify the principles of ABA that are utilized within the placement setting and connects to concepts acquired in class
- Student can identify a behaviour for observation, writes an operational definition and collects data
- Engages in age-appropriate play with learners
- Student attempts and successfully builds rapport and pairs with learners
- Student identifies learners’ strengths, needs and interests
- Student engages in reciprocal exchanges with learners
- Participates in data collection either independently or through IOA and graphs data where appropriate
- Through the discretion of the placement agency, the student reviews and implements a skill acquisition, maintenance or generalization program with support
- Student attempts and demonstrates effective instruction delivery with a high degree of accuracy
- Student responds appropriately to challenging and/or interfering behaviours. It is important to note that students are not responsible and should not manage challenging behaviour
