Endocannabinoidome

The Endocannabinoid System is a complex biological system found in all vertebrates, not just humans but also in other mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish (Maccarrone, 2022). It was discovered by an Israeli scientist Dr. Raphael Mechoulam and his team including Dr. Lumir Hanus in the early 1990s (Mauro, 2022). This widespread distribution suggests that the ECS has been conserved throughout evolution, indicating its importance in regulating various physiological processes across different species. The ECS is composed of cannabinoid receptor proteins, such as CB1 and CB2, as well as endogenous lipid-based neurotransmitters known as endocannabinoids, such as anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) (Narouze, 2021). While the specific components and functions of the ECS may vary slightly among different species, its fundamental role in maintaining homeostasis and regulating key bodily functions remains consistent.
