Science, Grade 10
Academic
This course is based on the Ontario Grade 10 Science Academic curriculum guidelines. It ensures the “Big Ideas” concept for learners to retain long after they have forgotten many of the details of their studies. To grasp the core concepts more profoundly, students must comprehend fundamental ideas, cultivate inquiry and problem-solving abilities, and link these concepts and skills to real-world contexts beyond the classroom. (Science Grade 10, 2009). This web-based learning tool (WBLT) will incorporate a constructivist approach for students to explore scientific concepts through investigation and discovery of the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Cognitive learning strategies will include concept mapping, scaffolding, and modelling to help students develop a deeper understanding of the scientific principles of the endocannabinoid system and processes (Oliver, 2011). Inquiry-based learning will encourage students to investigate phenomena and develop their understanding of scientific concepts (Koschmann, 2011). Experiential learning in the WBLT will create an engaging and immersive environment that promotes active exploration, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of the ECS (Chan, 2023). By integrating connectivism and multimodal learning principles on the ECS, the WBLT will create a dynamic and engaging learning experience that fosters active exploration, collaboration, and knowledge construction among learners (Hand, McDermott & Prain, 2016). By integrating problem-based learning principles learners will develop critical thinking skills, collaborate effectively, and apply their knowledge to real-world challenges (Sungur & Tekkaya, 2006). This WBLT utilizes a universal instructional design approach to create an inclusive and accessible learning experience. (Conole, 2013). By implementing a flipped classroom approach to learning about the endocannabinoid system, students can take ownership of their learning process, engage actively with the material, and develop critical thinking skills that will serve them well in their academic and professional pursuits.
