Introduction

In September 2022, Georgian implemented a unique academic and student services support model intended to assist veterans and their families in their post-secondary careers. Over the last two years, Georgian College has been committed to building an inclusive, student-centric academic and social support framework for military-connected students. The creation of a military-connected college at Georgian shows an alignment with military interests and values, recognition of the military community, and a desire to maximize student potential.

Over the past two years, more supports have been added for military-connected students, including a military-connected college support office and coordinator and new prior learning recognition. We are continually looking to add new student supports and to assist faculty and staff in becoming knowledgeable with military terms, military service, and factors that affect military families at the college.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Differentiate between the components of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), discerning unique roles and functions within the military.
  2. Identify differences between a Non-Commissioned Member (NCM), Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO), and Officers including educational requirements and backgrounds
  3. Recognize that there are a wide range of trades/careers available to someone joining the military.
