What Are Microaggressions?

As we begin situating ourselves in this content, it is important to first understand what microaggressions are.

Bias and prejudice often are a part of everyday interactions. While obvious prejudice and discrimination have become less socially acceptable in many cultures, they still exist in subtle ways. This creates situations in which individuals may unknowingly engage in prejudiced behaviour, perpetuating stereotypes, bias, and discrimination. Microaggressions are one example of subtle prejudice.

 

So, with this in mind, what do microaggressions look like in the work place?

 

Microaggressions in the Workplace

Workplaces are where we spend so much of our daily life. Many of our social interactions take place in the workplace, and there are professional and economic implications for those interactions.

With this in mind, let’s think a bit more of the significant of workplace microaggressions now. Open up the following panels to learn more about the details of microaggressions in the workplace.

 

 

There is a lot to learn when thinking about microaggressions in the workplace. What may seem as if it is an off-hand comment, or joke at first glance, can do lasting harm to employees who are victims of these actions. The first step to combatting microaggressions in the workplace, is making sure that we understand what they are.

 

Extending Your Learning

There has been little research attention paid to the microaggressions faced by Indigenous employees. However, Indigenous individuals and employees are not exempt from workplace microaggressions, and this is worthy of a deeper dive.
