Welcome to Module 2: Indigenous Health – Historical and Contemporary Perspectives

The purpose of this second module is to provide you with an overview of the historical socio-cultural perspective related to Indigenous people’s health within the context of the pre-contact, European settlement and contemporary settings.

Key aspects of Indigenous women’s diverse societal roles within the context of her relationship to family, community and nation will be highlighted. This historical perspective provides you with an appreciation of the losses experienced by Indigenous women and the impact on their overall well-being.

The learning outcomes for this module are as follows:

  1. Examine and articulate historical perspectives on Indigenous ways of knowing and being, highlighting the strengths and resiliencies of Indigenous peoples pre- and post-contact.
  2. Reflect on the diverse roles of Indigenous women within family, community, and nation, including historical and contemporary contexts, with an emphasis on how these roles affect Indigenous women’s health and well-being.
  3. Explore how you may adapt your current practice towards fostering Indigenous patient-centred care.
