Experiential Learning Requirements

Experiential Learning “supports students in gaining hands-on learning that helps them transition to employment”[1]. Experiential Learning can take the form of co-operative education, degree work placement, clinical/field placement, fieldwork/simulation labs, capstone/applied research projects, and service learning.

The co-op option in this program will provide eligible students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience while you complete two or three consecutive work terms as an employee in the field. This experience not only allows you to put classroom learning into practice, but will also provide valuable contacts for your future career.

To participate in this co-op option, you will need to complete an application process in the fourth semester. If academically qualified, you may be admitted to the co-op program. Academically qualified students who are accepted into the program will register for the co-op preparation course as scheduled. When you graduate, your diploma will highlight the co-op credential.

To apply, students in the fourth semester of a technology program are automatically added to a course shell in eCentennial by the Co-Op department. Information contained in this course shell include: Webinars and info sessions on what to expect, how to submit an application, associated fees, and other important information.

Minimum requirements to apply for the Co-op program:

  • Minimum of 80% of courses completed from year one and two
  • A minimum C (60%) grade in COMM-160/161
  • A cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher (this must be maintained for the duration of the program)
  • Students must be legally eligible to work in Canada
  • Students who meet the above prerequisites will apply to transfer to the co-op program as scheduled

Note 1: Students in a technology program may apply to the co-op program during their fourth semester. Meeting the minimum co-op program requirements does not guarantee admission into the co-op program. Technician students must transfer into a technology program to be eligible.

Note 2: Students in a Fast Track program that begin their program in the summer semester (month of May) are not eligible to apply to a co-op program.

The status of clinical/field placements and co-op work terms will be subject to public health directives and the reopening plan. Students may complete their placement requirements at sites that are permitted to open, either onsite, following appropriate health and safety protocols, or remotely. Students will be asked to read and sign a Student Informed Consent form in order to ensure that they understand their rights and the potential health and safety risks. Similarly, employers and/or placement hosts will be required to complete an Employer/Placement Health and Safety Site Checklist.

If workplaces are not permitted to open, placements and work terms may be completed remotely where feasible. In programs where placements or unpaid internships can not be facilitated through alternative/distance models, students will be allowed to complete these components at a later date.
