2 The 5 Rs of Open Educational Resources
Before diving into the types of OER, it’s important to understand the foundation that makes these resources truly ‘open.’ The 5 Rs outline the permissions that allow users to engage meaningfully with content—beyond just reading or viewing.
- Retain: Keep a copy of the resource forever (i.e. download, store, or print it with no expiration.)
- Reuse: Use the content in different settings (e.g. courses, study groups, workshops, etc.)
- Revise: Adapt or change the content to suit your needs (e.g., update stats or fix typos).
- Remix: Combine with other content to create something new.
- Redistribute: Share the original or modified resource with others.
