13 Student-Facing Advocacy

  • Campaigns (e.g., #TextbookBroke)
    • Join or lead student campaigns to raise awareness about textbook costs. The #TextbookBroke campaign encourages students to share how much they spend on course materials, highlighting the need for OER alternatives.
    • Use posters, surveys, or social media stories for maximum visibility.
  • Events (e.g., Open Education Week)
    • Get involved in Open Education Week every March. This global celebration features student panels, OER fairs, and campus-wide awareness events. McMaster often hosts talks and workshops open to students.
  • Creating and sharing open resources
    • Students can co-create learning resources (study guides, flashcards, slide decks) and publish them under a Creative Commons license. You don’t need to be an expert to contribute!
