3.1.3 – SN1 Reaction Mechanisms

Learning Objectives

  1. For SN1 reactions, predict products, write reaction schemes, draw curved arrow mechanisms, and draw energy profile diagrams, including all intermediates and transition states.
  2. For SN1 reactions, understand the relationship between the energy profile diagram, curved arrow mechanism, and rate law.
  3. Draw and explain the geometry and orbitals involved in a carbocation.
  4. Rank carbocations in terms of their stability and their propensity to undergo SN1 mechanisms.
  5. Explain how carbocations are stabilized based on their degree through electron density.
